What is Chautauqua? (shuh-tok'wah)
A unique mixture of education and entertainment, this event is held under a tent and features reenactments of historical characters supplemented by musical performances. Modeled after the programs first held on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in New York during the late 19th century, scholars appear in costume and speak in the character of historical figures. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the characters. The more you ask, the more you discover! The accidental benefit: in a place for fun and entertainment, visitors find a bit of history!
