The American Historical Theatre Presents: Dean Malissa as George Washington

With his impressive stature and a head of thick wavy white hair, Dean Malissa is a natural to portray our country's first President and Commander in Chief, General George Washington.  After several years of searching for the perfect interpreter to portray Washington, the American Historical Theatre in Philadelphia was delighted to find in Malissa a gentleman with the physical characteristics and intellectual ability to portray such an important historical figure.

Malissa is an accomplished performer having appeared at the Walnut Street and with other theatre companies in Philadelphia.  He has appeared in films, commercials, and TV shows.  He also lends his bass-baritone voice as a singer with a colonial music ensemble, and has a natural and perceptive manner in interactive first-person performance.  He brings these skills together in his interpretation of Washington, and is comfortable performing for audiences of any age and interest level.

As a member of the American Historical Theatre, Malissa has performed as General Washington at a wide variety of venues including at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens; at the Smithsonian, the National Archives, and The White House Visitors Center in Washington, DC; in the Philadelphia area at Carpenter's Hall, Independence National Historical Park, the National Constitution Center, the Valley Forge Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, and the Mikveh Israel Synagogue; and elsewhere at the Chicago Historical Society, at Arena West in Phoenix, and at a host of events around the USA.  He also frequently has given presentations for the New Jersey Council for the Humanities: Horizons Speakers Bureau. Malissa portrays Washington each summer for visitors to Philadelphia's historic district. Recently, Malissa portrayed General Washington in the Discovery Channel Film: "Moments in Time - Valley Forge: The Crucible."  Likewise, he portrayed Washington in a film made by the National Flag Foundation.

Malissa retired from corporate life, as a senior Vice President of Development for a large Philadelphia firm, to return to his call as an actor.  He also holds a 2nd degree black belt, is qualified in hand to hand combat and blade training, is an advanced horseman, a certified SCUBA Diver, and has 20+ years experience as a firefighter.
